Guts and Determination Shine Through for British Badminton
I have to admit, when it comes to sport I’m not one of those people who enjoy what many would call the ‘pure’ sports, i.e running or swimming. I prefer my sports to include a ball of some kind or at least a racket.
It has nothing to do with the way that I was brought up, my sister and mother were – and still are – into their running and I was always taken along to watch my sibling competing in competitions throughout the early part of me teenage years. Considering this, that might be the reason why I resent it so much and usually when the Olympics come around I am left searching for a sport I enjoy to lift my mood and entertain me for the duration of the competitions. In Beijing I have been fortunate enough to find such a sport early on in the form of badminton.
The sport for me is one of the most exciting to bet on and today's encounter could well have me looking at placing a further flutter on the pair claiming another medal to with their silver from the 2004 Athens games.
The British pair of Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms have really got me excited about this years Olympics andI will definitely be watching a lot more of this Summers events from now on thanks to a show of sheer determination and mental toughness us Brits have seemingly been lacking in many of our major sports over he last couple of decades.
Britain’s top pairing started extremely well, defending brilliantly and showing the thrusting, cutting attacking game which had led them to take silver four years ago in Athens, taking the first game 21-16.
The number two Chinese seeds unsurprisingly had the vast majority of the crowd behind them and despite an unwiltering second game performance from the GB pair Gao Ling and her partner Zheng Bo took the game to 16 forcing the match into a deciding third game.
Robertson, who had ankle surgery early in the year began to show signs of tiredness in the third game as Emms usually solid attack also began to loosen and the British side found themselves 12-17 down in almost a blink of an eye.
Both commentators and British support were beginning to harbour fears that the curse of British sport was about to hit again and the early belief that the British pair could reach the quarters once more began to fade.
What is great about any sport however is that it cannot be written. Bo, 24, was competing in his first Olympics and as the game went on, the tension began to show as Emms and Robertson, almost out of nothing appeared revitalised for one final assault on their Chinese opponents.
Mind games soon came into play with continued calls for new shuttles from the Chinese being turned away by the referee.
Emms and Robertson kept their focus, racking up seven straight points to turn the game on its head and lead 19-17. A lapse in concentration let the Chinese pair back into the game but a slip-up by Bo at the net handed the initiative back to Emms who had a chance to seal a quarter-final tie on her serve.
After a fierce exchange at the net between Robertson and Gao, the Englishman hit a smash right at the feet of Bo who was not ready for such a shot and as the shuttle came to rest on the court, the hundreds of British fans in the stadium began to celebrate, almost as excitedly as Emms and Robertson who were embraced by their coaches down on court.
Following a performance like today, I'll be very interested in checking the odds of these two going one better than Athens and all the way to gold in Beijing.
